He obtained his Doctoral degree from Industrial Engineering Bandung Institute of Technology in 1982, and his Master degree at Stanford University in 1977, after completing his study at the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1972. His research interests are in the field of Decision Analysis and Strategic Negotiation. Currently, he became the Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit for Development Monitoring and Oversight (UKP-PPP).

Problem Solving

Problem solving and decision making is a science that is needed in business and everyday life. In general, problem solving is closely related to decision-making, especially in management and leadership area.

  1. Problem Analysis is used to analyze the problem, either positive or negative, that may arise from unusual conditions.
  2. Decision Analysis is used in making decisions under uncertainties where there are many options with high risk. With decision analysis managers can make decisions that are more flexible and can minimize the risk.
  3. Potential Problem Analysis is used to “keep” everything goes according to the plans that have been defined and anticipate problems that may occur.

Examples of research in this field are:

  • Decision analysis in hospital development.

Negotiation

In general, negotiation is a communication process that produces coordination and cooperation. Negotiations can also mean to resolve conflicts between two or more parties.

  1. Distributive Negotiation is a condition in which the two parties are negotiating in order to compete for bigger profits.
  2. Integrative Negotiation is a condition in which the two parties are negotiating in order to work together and obtain the maximum benefit as measured by collective agreement.

Examples of researches in this field are:

  • Trans Metro Bandung Conflict Resolution.
  • Global Warming Negotiation Analysis using Drama Theory.
  • Analysis of environmental conflicts in the Citarum River Basin
  • Development of methodology for conflict resolution in Indonesian context.

Qualitative Approach in Decision Making

Real world decision makers mainly rely on intuition and heuristics in making decision. Research in this field aims to unfold how the decision-making process and the learning process are carried out by the decision maker in the real world. The benefits from research in this field are to propose practical steps in taking decisions with a minimum of bias and error.

Examples of researches in this field are:

  • Multi-paradigm business strategy development
  • Models development for conflict analysis based on drama theory
  • Policy-making in the national sugar industry case

Agent-Based Modeling

A social phenomenon, businesses in particular, does not arise from the action of the single decision maker (actor), but from the interaction of many actors in a system. Agent-based simulations utilizing computer simulations to understand how these phenomena may appear, the impacts that will occur, strategies and policies that should be taken to tackle complexities in social and business phenomenon.

Examples of researches in this field are:

  • Analysis of marketing strategies in the telecommunications industry
  • High school choice system in Bandung
  • Simulation of negotiations that involving emotions and learning
  • Simulation of post-disaster investment planning
  • Simulation to improve efficiency of household electricity consumption patterns

Decision Making Optimization on Management

Research in planning and optimization management process aims to elaborated, and examines the existing methods and techniques. Some of the methodologies developed in this area are system dynamics, linear programming, monte carlo simulation, etc.

Examples of researches in this field are:

  • Modeling the dynamics of e-government system implementation
  • Policy modeling to minimize CO2 emissions
