“My research interests include team/group processes and outcomes, cultural diversity in teams, and ethical/unethical decision making in teams, as well as interpersonal and intercultural communication in the context of group/team. I am specifically interested in how teams as an entity behave and manage themselves, how individuals in teams engage in teamwork behavior and how teams affect and are affected by both individual behavior and organizations or systems in which they exist.

What are changes that your research bring to the management thinking?
Nowadays, organizations are increasingly using teams or work groups to accomplish a variety of work. Even the use of teams is prevalent in inter-organizational context. I see teams and/or groups as a medium that fundamentally bridge individuals in an organization (or organizations) with the organization(s) itself (themselves) as a complex system. Understanding how teams or groups work will enhance our understanding of the way organizations work and accomplish their goals.
How do you inspire your students to lead?
I am not exactly sure how I inspire my students to lead since, to me, inspiration is essentially and fundamentally something that is attributed to you by other people. Students may be inspired (or not) by anything I say or do. But from my part (If anything that I have said and done works to inspire them), it is probably by being inspired myself. If I want my students to be inspired, I have to show what inspiration can do to me. Looking inspired can take a very simple form, such as smiling, or greeting, or asking simple questions (e.g. to lead oneself to greet other people is not easy for everyone). It can also be a challenge that I pose, or a story that I tell. Sharing stories about how you get inspired usually allows students to also think about their own stories when they feel inspired, thus making them excited about what they have and want to do. With inspiration comes leading. Being able to inspire students to lead is not a now-or-never thing. It is the way you communicate and engage in what they do that makes them able to lead.
What’s your favorite thing to do that doesn?t involve teaching/research?
I love spending time with my family and also doing my ultimate hobby: singing.
