Tell us about your research?

“My research interest is innovation management and new product development. My previous research was about building a solid upfront stage in new product development with a case study at a European manufacturing company.

Currently, I am interested in the research related to disruptive innovation, especially in identifying customer’s hidden needs to create disruptive products or services in emerging market.”

What are changes that your research bring to the management thinking?

My research might contribute into disruptive innovation literature by elaborating the customer orientation under disruptive changes. This will include the integration with research on understanding the customers in marketing research.

How do you inspire your students to lead?

Leadership is a valuable skill that can not be learnt from theory in class. Leadership should be built by doing, interacting with others in a group or project. Building leadership is an ongoing process and it takes action. So, I will encourage my students to take every opportunity to take a leadership position in any projects or activities that they are in.

What’s your favorite thing to do that doesn?t involve teaching/research?

“I like sports. My favorite one is tennis. I usually play it twice a week. Ping pong is other thing that I like to do. Football? I like watching it rather than playing especially EPL.

I also enjoy hanging out with my family and playing with my kids. ”

What does to lead means to you?

“Borrowing a phrase that’s been introduced to me long time ago during student orientation period, a leader is one who ‘knows the way, shows the way and goes the way’. Somehow, I still remember it very well 🙂

Therefore, I would like to think that ‘to lead’ is to do whatever you say; or to have integrity. You can not motivate others and expect them to follow you if you do not have integrity.

Then, it explains why our beloved country suffers from lack of leadership. It because our ‘formal’ leaders lack of integrity hence people distrust them. Indonesians are longing for true leaders, i.e. people with integrity.”
