Based on Japan’s experiences either natural and man-made disasters, Kansai University has developed and carried out a specific program of safety management as a common language. Atsushi visited SBM to share the concern of safety management. “At this moment, Kansai University intents to submit a proposal to the Japanese Government about the establishment of university consortium to promote safety management”, he explained. Kansai University invites around 12 universities around Asia. SBM ITB is one of the invited members of the consortium which is recommended by Dr. Fumio Itoh, the President of ABEST21. Other universities from Indonesia include University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, University of Lampung, and University of Brawijaya.

The cooperation would cover a common course of safety management, a common curriculum of safety management, student exchange, lecturer exchange, and joint degrees. For the short time program is to build a common reference of safety management and an internship program for university member’s students. SBM ITB positively responded this initiative for its relevance to the mission of SBM for the betterment of wider society, its value of human safety, and part of research program at SBM.

Kansei University and ITB would sign a letter of intention for this program. The next step is to have a workshop in Kuala Lumpur hosted by The Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) around October and November to share each member’s perspective on safety management and to develop a common plan to realize this idea. *** (TMS)
