He has been running the entrepreneurship program at Ryerson University for the past 6 years, and have previously involved in various industries working as entrepreneur, venture capitalist, investor, commercial banker, and corporate executive. In a talk show of “Thinking like an Entrepreneur” attended by approximately 100 students, Dave shared about things he learnt about entrepreneurship and invites students to start to see things and think differently as entrepreneurs do. Entrepreneurs do not search for opportunities but create one of your own from nothing. Keep experimenting until you find something good and then create some value, something useful to be put on the market and adjust it and learn everything that you need to be a successful entrepreneur, the market will teach you how… if you’re listening. If you are humble enough to let the market teach you, it will teach you everything you need to be successful.

Dave explained that there are two types of tendency in starting a business, like a bear or a mosquito. Like bear characteristics, bear moves slow but nothing stops a bear. This kind of company moves slowly, deliberately, and every step along the way the company is always making a profit, no big investment, no big risks, and goes completely into the market. This is suitable for businesses that last forever such as restaurants, etc. Alternatively, build a company with characteristics of mosquito, which has no defense at all. Everything is built for one purpose only: to sell breakthrough product to tick the customers and waste no time on anything else. This is perfect for businesses that disappear quickly.

In conclusion, Dave tells us three things that must be done by those who want to become entrepreneurs. First, you have to be bold, brave, and willing to do things that other people think are crazy. Whatever problems you have, step back, you will see more. Sometimes the direction to your goal looks like you are going away from it and sometimes the direction you want to go is taking you farther away. Secondly, develop your mental habit to think more, think less, open your eyes, and open your minds. Thirdly, ability to create value for your business, and you will get a fair reward for your efforts. “Most importantly, if you want to become an entrepreneur and got proper reward for your effort, then there is no half way measure allowed, if you are going to do it, do it completely. You must do this all or nothing,” added Dave.In a talk show of “Thinking like an Entrepreneur” attended by approximately 100 students, Dave shared about things he learnt about entrepreneurship and invites students to start to see things and think differently as entrepreneurs do.
