In this month’s Fridaypreneurship, we invited Joshua Simandjuntak, owner/designer of product design consultancy, Zylia Design Studio and Indonesian local furniture company, Karsa, as a speaker to share his journey of establishing his company in 2006. Studied and lived in the UK for fifteen years, he decided to return home to Indonesia. Realizing the chances are small for the work opportunity because during that time creative industry is unknown, he began his business with a design consultancy firm and ventured into creating his own brand. Joshua founded his product design consultancy firm, Zylia Design Studio in 2006. It mainly provides consulting services, designs and builds furniture and handles various projects from local and international clients. With few awards in hand, such as gold award from Indonesian Good Design Selection and award from Design for Asia, it sparks interests and queries from public on how to purchase their products and eventually in 2011, led him to launch Karsa, which means ‘a passion to create,’ a retail brand that focuses on furniture and home accessories products.

At the talk show, Joshua explains that there are few factors that will enhance your success in business. Primarily in creative business, value creation is one of the main elements involved. An added value is what determine the success of your products in the market. Joshua also tells us that in Karsa, he often challenges his design team to create something different and new. Curiosity is a good habit of discovery and it is needed for you to grow and to keep up to date. This is why it is important to surround yourself with likeminded people, those with the same chemistry, vision, and mission will create a solid team in running the business.

Exposure through exhibition, press and media, and social media channels are helpful to build communication with clients and are as important as other factors. Having exhibition is good for your brand exposure so you are in the know. However, brand is an aura, so do exhibit at the right place because it does matter. The same goes with media, they need a story so if you can provide a story, they will expose it. All these will help you increase your profile.

In the Q&A session, there are varieties of questions asked by the audience ranging from copyright issue, how to maintain employee, to Karsa’s business model. For copyright, Joshua said he normally does a design registration, mostly for a visual form. Furthermore, to maintain employees, always give them space for their own passion and give room to grow intellectually. Lead their passions for their existence to be part of the brand. In Karsa, a team member could design, produce, and commercialize their design to be accessible to public; therefore he/she could receive royalty from the sales of their product. To end his talk, Joshua said, do not hesitate to cross-discipline, you might come up with new discovery or innovation that you have never think before. So open your mind, make friends with students from different disciplines and the ideas might start to flow in.
