“Ibu Melia, I’m Alif, I am one of your students in Bio-Ind management and entrepreneurship.”

“Ibu Melia, I’m Alif, I am one of your students in Bio-Ind management and entrepreneurship.”
I welcomed the young man with warm greetings and positions. Maybe because so many students and also ages factors, I’m easy unremembered people?… “Ah, I feel like I’m getting older,” I thought to myself.

Long story short, we talked for a quite long time, and the young man is currently making a business of cattle and goats in Garut. He offered me to buy one of his livestock for qurban which he also sold in that location.

“This is Green Qurban, Bu,”he offered. I wonder with the term ?green qurban.” But that’s what makes me curious why it was called “green qurban.”

“Why do you call the Qurban green, do you want the sheep and cow to be painted green” I teased, laughing.

“ah, you are kidding?” he replied, laughing with my comment

“If you buy my cow or sheep, I give you a tree; you can choose some fruit trees that I have here, there are mango, star fruit and others” he continued.

“Wow interesting, buy a qurban can get a fruit tree,” I comment

“Yes, Bu, I remember one of your statements in the class, that global warming is signed that we have excess CO2 instead of O2. That’s what keeps me excited, I’m nervous whether later my children can get enough O2, so I made this business assist my father, at the same time handing out trees. To be planned, fruit trees are my choice. I’m sure that people are happy getting a fruit tree and the possibility of planting is higher than I give other trees, “he said.

“It is so cool; you are so great having an idea like that, congratulations and thank you for saving my grandchildren too” I replied with a smile in amazement.

“Then you also grow your tree seeds?”I asked

“Some yes Bu, some of them I supply from farmers”

“Why don’t you grow all seeds, you can also sell it, right?”I asked further.

“Yes, bu, but for me, it’s also an opportunity to train fruit farmers to be more green too,”he replied?

“What do you mean by that,” I asked further

“The tree seed that I grow by my self using organic fertilizer, I mean majority use organic fertilizers, I made it from the waste of my livestock. Even it is still mixed with chemical fertilizer, but is minimum, just a very small portion. But we could say it as organic fruits.

I also want to train the fruit farmers where I bought the seed to do the same as I do, I share my organic fertilizer to them, I also how to use it. They can also see the results from my farms, and they believe besides being more efficient, the seed growing better than conventional ways.”

“I am so impressed with you” I added.

“Thank you, Bu, I also feed my livestock with organic food bu,”

“O ya?, you made it by yourself?” I asked, more amazed

“Not yet Bu, I still learn how to make it, until now I still buy from one of IPB alumni who produces organic livestock feed, the research had passed laboratory testing, and the results are good for livestock, contain better animal nutrition than just eating grass. In principle, I can make, bacterial fermentation with bran and a mixture of several other nutrients such as bran and tofu, “he replied.

“Great?great” I comment “your business is so cool, I pray for your success, “I say while rising my two thumbs. Alif smiled

“Thank you Bu, so do you want to see my livestock?” he asked

“of course, not just see, but I have to buy one” I added smiling.

Alif is one of example today young people who decide to be an entrepreneur with the “green economy approach. Green economy is the actions of economic activities resulting improvement of human well-being and social equity, while at the same time significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. This is an effort to create a resilient economy that provides a better quality of life for all within the environmental limits. Principally, green economy links the economic, social and ecological considerations of development.

Green economy is another term of sustainable development that has become global attention among government, scholars, and activists. This term can refer to sectors (e.g., energy), topics (e.g., pollution), principles (e.g., polluter pays) or policies (e.g., financial instruments) as well as describing an underpinning strategy, such as the mainstreaming of environmental policies or a supportive economic structure.

Of some principles that produce to translate the real practice of green economy, today concern is focused in some issues. First, the consciousness of resource limitation and efficiency. The concept of economic reduce, reuse and recycle (3R) should be implemented in entire economic activities. Business has to start to change its production pattern from a linear approach to cycle approach coping the natural system. The transformation could be as a stage as figure 1. [1,2,4]

Second, generating innovation to support sustainable development. Meeting sustainable development goals require action to harnessing and maximizing the potential of technological change. For example, the limitation of the energy resources, pressure us to find a new solution of energy and produce a device to support energy efficiencies. We do not only the tangible innovation inform of tools or new materials, but also social innovation to help behavioral change that drives our society to behave more sustainable. [3]

Third, justice and equality. The world is still challenged with discrimination, particularly gender discrimination. Green economy promotes equality and some opportunity to every people. With the balance, the target of sustainability could be achieved. Big gap of balance and distribution of justice will create ignorance and egocentrism to the mission of sustainability. Improving economic access and provide equal opportunity to develop and will create active participants toward sustainability [1,2]

Fourth, governance and collaboration. Sustainability needs a partnership. The mutual benefit toward sustainability could be achieved when trust develops among actors, and this is only achieved through good management.

Alif’s business at least had worked in the four elements above, the organic principle and managing by-products of the farm have worked for principle number 1 and number 2. He innovates with their supply chain and business process at the same time have to use the 3R principle. Working with local farmers is one way to implement the principle number 3 and 4. Training for farmers will improve their market access that could create the sense of justice and equality of the practices.

Our studies of sustainability business in small business in Indonesia revealed that education played a high contribution to a creating green business opportunity. We believe education for sustainable development needs to be thoughtfully designed to improve student awareness and interest to create future business more viable with the principle of green economy. Green economy should be seen as a business opportunity, not just a global movement. [3]

Today effort to introduce sustainable development to young people, will contribute to our future sustainability. Study of MIT university said that starting sustainability from the early stage design a business will create high probability of sustainable business.
