Former Governor of DKI Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, known as Ahok, delivered a public lecture for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at the SBM ITB Jakarta Campus on Wednesday (21/5). In his talk, Ahok emphasized the critical role of character in leadership, particularly in navigating the complexity and challenges of today’s world. He urged future leaders to remain guided by conscience and idealism.
Ahok underlined that integrity, exemplary behavior, and authenticity are the core foundations of effective leadership. He summarized his leadership philosophy through three key principles: Straight Head, Subordinates Do Not Dare to Deflect, Authentic in Action, and All Students, All Teachers. According to him, a leader must be open to learning from anyone while consistently setting a good example. “If the leader is upright, subordinates will not dare to stray,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of critical thinking and sound budget management in the face of global economic competition. In this context, digitalization plays a crucial role in enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. Ahok advocated for the use of digital signatures and electronic systems to promote transparency.
Ahok further stressed the principle of accurate cost-cutting, achieving efficiency without compromising public services. “Those who contribute the most are the most deserving,” he said, emphasizing a management approach based on consequences, where responsibility and measurable results are the key benchmarks.
In terms of human resource management, he encouraged a system grounded in family values, meritocracy, empathy, fairness, and a strong sense of belonging.
“We are not just humans, but human beings. We must work with our hearts. Decisions made with conscience are never wrong,” he said.
Concluding his lecture, Ahok expressed optimism about the future of the nation despite corruption remaining a persistent challenge.
“In the midst of darkness, there is always hope. Everything happens so that we can be better,” he said.
