The MBA program at the SBM ITB has launched a collaboration with UNIQLO, allowing dozens of students to intern at the global apparel brand. The initiative aims to prepare future leaders through hands-on business experience and real-world challenges.
In a sharing session on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, Mayank Shukla, Manager of the CEO’s Office at Fast Retailing, introduced students to UNIQLO’s leadership philosophy and the uniqueness of its program.
“This program is not a one-size-fits-all approach,” Shukla said. “We are looking for individuals who dare to take ownership, embrace a people-first leadership spirit, and thrive in a fast-paced global environment.”
Shukla explained that UNIQLO’s mission is to transform clothing, challenge conventional thinking, and make a positive impact on the world. He highlighted innovations such as HeatTech and AIRism, which have redefined comfort, warmth, and breathability in everyday wear.
He also shared the brand’s LifeWear philosophy: simple, functional, and high-quality clothing designed for everyone. “We’re not a fast-fashion brand,” he emphasized. “We aim to improve everyday life with timeless, gender-neutral, and essential products.”
The session provided MBA students with a deeper understanding of UNIQLO’s operations. With more than 3,600 stores in over 25 countries and a market capitalization among the top five in Japan, UNIQLO’s growth offers valuable lessons in business strategy.
Shukla outlined the company’s integrated business model, which gives it full control over design, production, distribution, and retail, ensuring consistent quality worldwide. From a single store in 1984, UNIQLO has grown into the world’s third-largest apparel company, a journey Shukla illustrated with a growth chart.
He also shared an anecdote about the brand’s name: originally meant to stand for “Unique Clothing,” a typo during registration resulted in “Uniqlo.” The story drew laughter from the audience and added a lighthearted touch to the presentation.
“Retail is changing. The world is changing. And we believe the next great leaders are here, starting with you,” Shukla told the students.
For SBM ITB MBA students, the collaboration is more than just an internship opportunity. It’s a chance to join a company that values innovation, purpose, and people, and to grow into leaders who not only adapt to change but also drive it.
