Dean and lecturers of SBM ITB launch book on strategies for managing Gen Z in the workplace

December 1, 2025

SBM ITB officially launched its latest book titled “Human Capital Management: Managing Gen Z in the Workplace” through the HCM Talk event on Friday (24/11). The launch was led by the Dean of SBM ITB, Prof. Dr. Aurik Gustomo, and co-authored by lecturers from the People and Knowledge Management Expertise Group.

The book is written by Prof. Dr. Aurik Gustomo, along with Adita Pritasari, M.S.M., and Nur Arief Rahmatsyah Putranto, M.HRM. (Hons), and M. Ramadhani Sanjaya, M.S.M. They discuss major changes in today’s work environment, where up to five generations work together with different characters, ways of thinking, and communication styles.

In his presentation, Prof. Aurik emphasized the characteristics and aspirations of Generation Z, who are now entering the job market. He stated, “When asked about their dreams, 80% of students express a desire to become entrepreneurs. Therefore, companies cannot treat them merely as employees; they must also prepare them to think and act like entrepreneurs.”

He introduced the concept of a “mini company,” which is a new approach to organizational governance. This model allows young talent to manage small units as if they were independent companies.

In response to the stereotype that Gen Z is easily fatigued and less disciplined, Ramadhani Sanjaya offered a different perspective. He stated, “If we look more deeply, it’s not that Gen Z is lazy. It’s that the work system hasn’t provided the necessary space, direction, and opportunities for experimentation and innovation.”

Furthermore, one important issue discussed is the role of leadership. “Often, the problem lies in the leadership style. Leaders feel that the methods taught by their seniors are the only correct ones, whereas today’s generation requires a different approach,” Ramadhani added.

This book offers practical strategies and tools for leaders to navigate multigenerational dynamics and optimize the potential of Gen Z in the workplace. Aimed at future leaders, the book serves as a timely reference for building adaptive organizations ready to welcome the next generation of talent.

With a focus on human-centric, tech-enabled, and purpose-driven talent management, this book provides research-based insights relevant for leaders, managers, HR practitioners, and students entering the workforce.

The content of this book is designed to meet the needs of executives transforming organizations, line managers dealing directly with multigenerational team dynamics, HR practitioners transitioning into strategic business partners, and students preparing to become future leaders in an era of rapid change.

“We invite you to begin this transformation journey with us, building organizations where every generation can grow, collaborate, and contribute their best,” conclude the SBM ITB lecturers, both as an invitation and a hopeful message for this book.
