Melia Famiola has been a faculty member at the School of Business and Management, Institut Teknologi Bandung (SBM ITB) since 2004, within the Expertise Group of Entrepreneurship and Technology Management. She earned her PhD in 2015 from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, with a research focus on sustainable business. In the same year, she received an award from the Rector of ITB for teaching innovation. More recently, in 2023, she was honored by Perhumas Indonesia for her sustainability innovations developed through research and community engagement. She has also obtained e-diplomas from Harvard University in Sustainable Business Strategy and Business and Climate Change.
Her academic and professional expertise centers on sustainability innovation, with a particular focus on Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG), sustainable business, social innovation, and strategic CSR.
In addition to her teaching role, Melia currently serves as Deputy Director for Business Development at the Directorate of Science and Technology Area, ITB, where she is responsible for advancing the commercialization of ITB’s innovations. Beyond her academic leadership, she is also the founder of several initiatives, including the Teras Hijau Project (THP), a foundation dedicated to cultivating entrepreneurial ecosystems for the circular economy. Through THP, she has developed several flagship programs:
- ByCulars Lab: a living laboratory that transforms waste into innovative, marketable products to strengthen the circular economy.
- Pawon Sareng: a green business incubator that supports SMEs in building sustainable enterprises.
- Sekolah Alam Carawala Nusabhakti: a free school that integrates sustainability into early childhood education, instilling green values from the very beginning of learning.
In addition, Melia is the Co-founder of the Institute for Sustainable Economics and Business Studies (EBSI) and ByCulars Lab, both of which focus on advancing sustainable business practices and developing innovative waste-to-value solutions for the circular economy.
