Covid-19 has changed people’s working habits from work from the office (WFO) to work from home (WFH). Hence, many people nowadays use digital platforms to connect, collaborate, and meet each other. However, many struggles to deliver the right messages to the internal company or customers when communicating through media such as email, chat, and other collaboration platforms.

Dinoy Alamsyah, a Senior Media Manager at Unilever, explained three pillars we need to pay attention to when delivering a message. “There are three pillars or foundations for structuring your message to deliver and has the right impact, namely audience first, purposeful, and be clear & concise,” he said through a guest lecture in Business communication and negotiation class, Tuesday (14/9/2021).

Dinoy revealed that these three pillars are fundamental in the business and consumer perspectives. “Without knowing or without understanding all of the three pillars, whatever we convey might not be reaching out to them,” Dinoy highlighted.

The first pillar is audience first. Dino mentioned that we should understand our audience first and what we want to deliver for them. So, it is crucial to know for whom we want to deliver our message, whether to an internal colleague, business supplier, or customer. “To whom you are talking will define what you are talking about,” said Dinoy.

After addressing the audience, the second pillar is addressing a purposeful message. Dinoy said that having a purposeful message is crucial because you can notice what data is needed in the message and what is not.

“Being purposeful, having an objective, and knowing what your audience wants are essential,” he commented.

After knowing the audience and what we should tell them, comes the third pillar: be clear and concise. In academics, we are often required to write in a certain minimum length standard, such as writing a minimum of 600 words. However, in the workplace, Dinoy said that we should be as sharp and concise as possible. “Being clear and concise is important,” Dinoy said.
