Learning through games is a promising future learning method due to the method’s suitability for Generation Z, whose traits prioritize social values and a desire to interact.

This was stated by Aria Bayu Pangestu, the Lecturer and member of the Laboratory of Educational Games (LEG) team at the SBM ITB, during a Virtual Workshop held on Friday (12/8/2022) at the 7th International Conference on Management in Emerging Markets (ICMEM) 2022 SBM ITB.

According to Aria, the game is an effective educational tool. The technique introduces various simple rules into the game so that learning is easily accepted. As a result, people are motivated to learn.

Learning is rigid when using games, so students do not end up sitting and listening to the teacher. Learning can be conducted in a fun and engaging atmosphere. As a result, teachers can instill positive habits in their students’ lives.

“Learning through games is appropriate for developing non-technical abilities such as critical thinking, time management, leadership, collaboration, resource management, understanding consequences, understanding risks, and other non-technical abilities,” Aria explained.

Furthermore, using games in the learning process can enhance students’ understanding. Things that are not conveyed by traditional learning methods can thus be absorbed optimally. Learning through games can also be used in a variety of situations.

However, the game-based learning method cannot replace conventional learning because games without learning have a lower impact on students. As a result, game aids can be used to bridge the gap between cluelessness and knowledge.
