SBM ITB scholar spearheads global dialogue on transformative services at HICSS 2026 Hawaii – United States

February 6, 2026

As the digital landscape continues to redefine how society interacts, Nila Armelia Windasari, Ph.D., a prominent researcher from SBM ITB, took center stage at the 59th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-59) held in January 2026. Dr. Nila’s participation was supported by the prestigious LPDP Equity: Top Academic Seminar Presenting Program, a testament to her standing in the global academic community and SBM ITB’s commitment to international research excellence.

Championing Sustainability through Transformative Services

Beyond presenting her research, Dr. Nila played a pivotal leadership role as the Minitrack Chair for the session titled “Transformative Service System in a Sustainable World”. In this capacity, she moderated a high-level exchange of ideas focused on how service systems can be engineered not just for efficiency, but for the holistic well-being of individuals and the planet. She led the minitrack in this conference since 2024 with other prominent scholars in Service Science, such as Prof Paul Maglio from University of California, Merced and Prof Fu-ren Lin from National Tsinghua University.

Redefining Digital Behavior through the Lens of SDG 12

A highlight of the conference was Dr. Nila’s presentation of her latest research, “Value Co-Destruction on Online Forum” (Read Paper Here). While much of service research focuses on “value co-creation,” Dr. Nila’s work bravely explores the “dark side” of digital interactions—where value is diminished or destroyed through negative engagement. This research provides a critical contribution to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. In the modern era, “consumption” extends far beyond physical products; it encompasses how we consume and produce information and social interactions in digital spaces. Dr. Nila argues that “co-destruction” in online forums represents an unsustainable form of digital consumption. By identifying the triggers of value destruction, her work offers a blueprint for creating more responsible, ethical, and sustainable digital ecosystems where service providers and users can interact without harming the social fabric.

A Legacy of Excellence

Dr. Nila’s dual role as a thought leader and a researcher at HICSS 2026 underscores SBM ITB’s mission to produce “world-class research with local relevance.” By addressing the complexities of the digital experience, her work ensures that the transition to a digital-first world remains inclusive and sustainable. “The HICSS platform allows us to bring Indonesian perspectives to global challenges,” said Dr. Nila. “Through the support of LPDP Equity, we are not just participating in the conversation; we are helping to lead it, ensuring that the future of service systems is one that values responsibility as much as it values innovation.”
