“Should I continue to postgraduate or work?” is often the question pondered by many bachelors in Indonesia. In the midst of the competitive workforce, it is unfortunately common to see bachelors who are still unable to land a job or who are in a job that’s not aligned with their interests and talent. Exclusively on SBM ITB Talks, Melvin Mumpuni, the Founder of Finansialku.com, also a graduate of MBA ITB, shares his stories and insights to answer the question.

Melvin’s Story from Masters to Finansialku
Melvin joined MBA ITB due to his longing to learn and receive managerial skillset. Based on his experience, a postgraduate does not only discuss things theoretically, yet it’s more focused on real-life study cases. Those bits of knowledge are then able to be implemented in the workforce. He also shared some skillsets that are “must haves”  nowadays, including critical thinking, decision making, and thorough based analysis. In his master’s degree journey, Melvin saw opportunities, did research, and accompanied by MBA ITB resources, he came up with Finasialku.

High Undergraduate Unemployment Rate
Indonesia’s unemployment rate is 5,38 percent, whereas 14 percent of them are bachelor’s and diploma graduates. Melvin argues that competition is getting tougher as more and more people are graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Indonesia. Nowadays a degree is not enough, graduates need special skill sets. Melvin recommends 3 main skills to have: communication, leadership, alongside money and financial management.

Considerations for Master’s or Work First
One thing is for sure, no choice is easier than the other. Nevertheless, in choosing both options, we need to consider the resources/chances available. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but going for a Master’s degree would help to achieve managerial skillsets that are important for one’s career path. Melvin advised us all to focus on each and everyone’s own concerts. At the end of the day, whether it’s a master’s or work first, it’s okay.
