September 24, 2025

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan emphasized the importance of an ethical culture in politics and leadership. He stated that politicians must abandon luxurious lifestyles and become accustomed to using public transportation to better understand the lives of the people.

He made this statement during an Expert Talk entitled “Ethical Culture and Good Governance” at the Nemangkawi Auditorium, SBM ITB, on Tuesday (September 23). The event was attended by SBM ITB students, including international exchange participants.

In his remarks, Prof. Aurik Gustomo, Dean of SBM ITB, highlighted that SBM ITB serves as a leading educational institution in Bandung. He emphasized that since its inception, SBM ITB has prioritized entrepreneurship, leadership, and innovation. The institution boasts the largest number of international students in Bandung, has achieved AACSB international accreditation, and has produced numerous reputable publications in Scopus Q1 journals.

“Kang Farhan’s presence further strengthens SBM ITB’s commitment to delivering innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship with broad impact,” he said.

In his presentation, Farhan shared his personal experience of paying off all his loan installments before entering politics. He described loan installments as a potential burden.

He also emphasized that integrity must begin with oneself, including the refusal of gratuities. For example, since taking office, he has reminded his staff to simply extend greetings on birthdays, rather than giving gifts.

Farhan also highlighted good governance through public services. He stated that the government exists to meet the basic needs of the community, encompassing education, health, and public order. While acknowledging the stigma of complicated and unaccountable public services, he emphasized the Bandung City Government’s commitment to improving service quality through bureaucratic reform, organizational restructuring, and strengthening performance accountability.

The question-and-answer session was interactive. Responding to a question about illegal parking levies, Farhan stated that the government is studying the concept of Land-Based Finance for parking development. Meanwhile, regarding collaboration between universities, the government, and industry, he emphasized the importance of evidence-based policy supported by academic research. Farhan also opened up opportunities for students to conduct research and internships within the Bandung City Government.

This event emphasized SBM ITB’s commitment to providing learning that is relevant to real-world challenges. The Mayor of Bandung’s presence not only enriched students’ insights but also strengthened collaboration between academia, government, and the community in realizing transparent, ethical, and service-oriented governance.
