PT Bukit Asam emphasizes knowledge management as key to innovation

November 26, 2025

Collective knowledge that is valuable, difficult to imitate, and integrated into company systems is considered the key to innovation amidst industry uncertainty. This perspective emerged in the second session of HCM Talks 2025, organized by SBM ITB in collaboration with PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) in Jakarta on Friday (November 21).

PTBA’s Director of Human Resources and General Affairs, Ihsanuddin Usman, stated that the company is entering a transition phase toward a new business model that demands continuous innovation. At this stage, knowledge management is seen as a strategic asset that accelerates organizational learning and strengthens competitive advantage.

“This strategic asset is valuable because it creates uniqueness, is difficult to imitate, and is integrated into the system. That is the importance of collective knowledge,” he said.

He emphasized that innovation depends not only on technology, but also on the company’s ability to develop business models and value-creating strategies.

“We don’t just focus on technology, but also on how to market products and create new value,” said Ihsanuddin.

PTBA encourages the role of Subject Matter Experts to strengthen knowledge dissemination, despite internal barriers.

“Many experts love to learn but are reluctant to speak up. Therefore, proactivity and openness are key to building strong knowledge management,” he said.

Meanwhile, Achmad Ghazali, a lecturer in Human Resource Management and Knowledge Management at SBM ITB, emphasized that global dynamics, including deglobalization, supply chain volatility, and talent mobility, demand that organizations have the capacity to learn quickly. The acceleration of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, makes learning capabilities increasingly crucial.

“The ability to learn rapidly is now the main driver of sustainable human resource development,” he said.

Achmad added that psychological safety is the foundation of a learning organization. A psychologically safe work environment enables exploration and experimentation, which are essential for innovation.

“Individuals must feel safe to try and not be afraid of making mistakes. Without that, the learning process cannot take place,” he said.

This session is part of the HCM Talks 2025 series, focusing sustainability and knowledge management. The event also featured three additional sessions and the launch of SBM ITB Dean Aurik Gustomo‘s latest book, which explores strategic issues such as sustainability, knowledge management, inclusive culture, and HR analytics.
