Supporting sustainable ecotourism, SBM ITB analyzes mangrove carbon stocks

December 17, 2025

SBM ITB has completed a technology-oriented community service program titled “Mangrove-Based Big Data Analytics Platform” in Pengudang Village, Bintan, Riau Islands, since last October. The program was led by Meditya Wasesa, Ph.D., associate professor of business analytics, as part of ITB’s 2025 bottom-up community service program targeting the 3T areas (Underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost regions).

The program produced two primary outcomes. First, a big data analytics platform for monitoring mangrove forest ecosystems and their carbon stocks by combining satellite imagery and field surveys.

“This data validates our satellite analysis and allows us to develop an accurate carbon stock estimation method. This platform scientifically demonstrates the environmental value of mangrove ecosystems and prepares communities for the era of carbon trading and net zero,” said Meditya.

The second output is a book titled “Mangrove and Pengudang Community-Based Tourism,” which discusses mangrove conservation and community-based tourism development in Pengudang Village, including biodiversity, local tourism models, and the role of environmental conservation. Meditya explained that this program also supports community-driven local tourism management, placing conservation at its core, and hopes that Pengudang Village can serve as an example for other villages in Indonesia.

The Acting Head of Pengudang Village, Indra Yani, stated that the SBM ITB activities broaden the community’s knowledge and encourage sustainable innovation. He welcomed the English publication about the village, which both domestic and international tourists frequently visit.

“We hope this book and technology will benefit both Pengudang residents and visitors,” he said.

The Head of the Pengudang Mangrove Tourism Awareness Group, Iwan Winarto, appreciated SBM ITB’s long-term collaboration with the village. He hopes the English publication on mangrove conservation and local MSMEs will increase international awareness and interest in Pengudang Village and bring economic benefits to the coastal community.
