SBM ITB awarded Ignasius Jonan the Avirama Nawasena Lifetime Achievement Award during the celebration of SBM ITB’s 22nd Anniversary at the SBM ITB Bandung Campus (February 11th). The Avirama Nawasena Lifetime Achievement Award is SBM ITB’s highest honor, presented to individuals who demonstrate dedication, integrity, and a managerial legacy with a long-term impact on the organization, ecosystem, and society.
The Dean of SBM ITB, Prof. Dr. Aurik Gustomo, S.T., M.T., emphasized that this award recognizes Jonan’s long-term leadership, particularly at PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero). Aurik emphasized that this award acknowledges leaders who create lasting and meaningful impact. It highlights not only their performance achievements but also their ability to foster enduring systems, values, and culture. This demonstrates that sustainability can coexist with organizational growth.

“The concept of sustainability must go hand in hand with the company’s progress. Transformative leadership will leave behind systems, values, and a work culture that endures beyond their tenure,” said Aurik.
Jonan is considered to embody these values through his leadership at PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero). Amidst various structural challenges at the state-owned enterprise, ranging from low service quality to weak organizational discipline, he successfully implemented fundamental transformation through comprehensive restructuring. This success is reflected in improved operational and financial performance, as well as the establishment of a modern management foundation that emphasizes discipline, professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.
In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, SBM ITB also presented Inspirational Individual awards to several figures deemed to have contributed to promoting sustainability. The award was posthumously awarded to the late Prof. Akhmad Zainal Abidin, M.Sc., Ph.D., for his dedication to developing the Zero Waste Management (Masaro) system, which is transforming waste management into a more sustainable and economically valuable system. Awards were also presented to Prof. Dr. Ir. Melia Laniwati Gunawan, M.S., for her Red and White Catalyst innovation, which promotes national energy industry independence. Zagy Berian was also recognized as an ITB Young Alumni for Sustainability through the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) initiative, empowering young people in the renewable energy movement.
In the Societal Impact category, an award was presented to PT PLN Indonesia Power Saguling for its collaboration in developing the Circular Village through the Teras Hijau Project (THP). This initiative demonstrates their commitment to community empowerment and sustainable practices. Through this series of awards, SBM ITB reaffirms its dedication to fostering transformative leadership and promoting sustainable innovation for national advancement.
