Ramona Blanes, from the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow, emphasized the importance of students continuing to publish research in reputable journals. She introduced the Asia Nexus Journal of Management, launched at the end of March.
“Because Asia is a huge, heterogeneous continent, we can learn from Asian management,” said Ramona at Academia Sharing #5, titled “Engaging with Contemporary Asian Management Research,” at the Pertamina Building, School of Business and Management, Bandung Institute of Technology (August 10).
According to her, learning from Asian management is not just about the discipline of management, but also about how we can deepen our understanding of management in its most general sense. This is where this journal becomes important, because it focuses on the concept of “nexus.”
“Do you know what nexus means? It’s a simple term: connection, the link, the bridge, that moves ideas, practices, and policies,” she explained.
Ramona explained why her institution is interested in Asian issues despite its geographic distance from the region. She said the research remains Asia-based and can compare contexts within and outside Asian countries, as long as it stays firmly rooted in the Asian context.
For example, she noted that a theory brought to an Asian context often doesn’t work as intended because Asian societies have different value systems. She also suggested that certain terms are better used in their local form rather than translated, as translation risks losing their original meaning.
According to Ramona, good research and papers must be relevant not only to the present but also to the future. That is what truly shapes a good researcher and scientific work, not just a matter of nexus.
