Emerald ambassador reveals the ins and outs of academic journal editors and reviewers

April 23, 2026

Associate Professor at Telkom University, Grisna Anggadwita, shared her insights into the ins and outs of academic publication. Speaking at the online MSM DSM Lounge on Friday (April 17), Grisna, an alumnus of the MSM program at the Institut Teknologi Bandung’s School of Business and Management, shared skills to help postgraduate researchers navigate the competitive academic environment, often known as “Publish or Perish.”

Grisna is a recipient of the Emerald Literati Award (for academic journal publishers) and the Best Doctoral Graduate of UGM in 2024. As Emerald’s Brand Ambassador for the East Asia region and an active reviewer for various international journals, Grisna shared a behind-the-scenes look at the work of academic journal editors and reviewers.

“Our main goal is not just to increase the number of publications,” said Grisna, “but to produce research that has a broad impact and truly advances our scientific fields.”

Grisna introduced a systematic approach to selecting target journals. She emphasized the importance of utilizing the Journal Finder tool and understanding the hierarchies in Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) indexing.

She also expressed her opinions on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research ethics. According to Grisna, major publishers such as Emerald and Elsevier have strict policies that prohibit the use of AI for copywriting, which includes generating original content or data.

She also warned students about publication taboos, such as double-submission, data manipulation, and the threat of predatory journals. She urged researchers to consult trusted sources, such as Beall’s List, to assess a journal’s credibility. She also reminded participants that every rejection is merely a stepping stone toward a more mature, higher-quality publication.

The MSM DSM Lounge serves more than just a technical workshop. By showcasing the success of alumni who have achieved international recognition as both researchers and ambassadors for global publishers, SBM ITB continues to strengthen a culture of excellence and global competitiveness.
